Scientific publication: Wheeleo increases up to 50% of walking speed

InnoRehab is pleased to present its first published scientific article. It concerns the effects of Wheeleo on the walking parameters of the hemiparetic person. The results of the study are published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine by Professor Th. Deltombe. The experiment was carried out by the physiotherapy departments of the Centre Hospitalier Neurologique William Lennox and the CHU UCL Namur.

This is the first time that the effects observed when using the Wheeleo have been scientifically objectified. This is certainly a first step because we do not intend to stop there, and other studies are being published or are just waiting to start.

Below is a summary of the test protocol and results.

Summary of the test protocol :

32 people with hemiplegia (paralysis of half their body) performed three different walking tests: a 10-metre spontaneous speed walking test, a 10-metre fast speed walking test and a 6-minute walking test. These three walking tests were performed twice each: once with a conventional quadripod cane (4-foot cane) and a second time with a Wheeleo. Several walking parameters were measured: walking speed, cadence, energy expenditure, type of walking (2-stroke or 3-stroke) and unbalance. The aim of the study was to identify changes in these parameters depending on the cane used.

Results :

10MWT (10MWT) walking test at spontaneous speed

  • + 22 % speed
  • - 19% time to cover the 10 meters
  • + 19% of the rate
  • + 22% of subjects who adopt a two-step walk
  • The order of passage has no impact

10-metre walk test at high speed

  • + 30% speed
  • + 25% of subjects who adopt a two-step walk

6 minute walk test (6MWT)

  • + 50 % speed for the 6-minute test
  • + 49% increase in the distance travelled in 6 minutes

The measured energy expenditure is not improved.

The number of contacts between the therapist and the patient (to recover an imbalance) is not significantly different. The Wheeleo therefore does not cause more imbalance despite a higher speed.

Patient satisfaction is significantly higher with the Wheeleo.
